HOLY WEEK IN LEFKARA

Preparations quietly begin. Homes bake traditional pastries and churches are filled with candlelight as the final services of Lent take place.
The most solemn evening of Holy Week.
The Epitaphios, covered in flowers, is carried slowly through the village streets while bells toll softly, in the evening. Locals follow with candles in silence; one of the most moving traditions in Cyprus.
Just before midnight, the village gathers outside the church. Candles are lit one by one.
Then the words echo across Cyprus:
“Christos Anesti.” (Christ is Risen.)
Fireworks fill the sky. Church bells ring loudly.
Families gather around long tables. Lamb roasts slowly over charcoal. Red eggs are cracked in friendly competition.
Lunch stretches into the afternoon, and sometimes into evening.
Easter continues the following day with celebrations.
