CHRIS HENTON

Who are? Tell us your story in a few short sentences.

I’m a full-time artist from Scotland with a focus on pencil drawings of historic architecture. I like to use travel sketching as a method for understanding new locations and their character.

In what ways does your work give you purpose? How does it fulfil you?

I find drawing is a tool for exploration. I love to learn a bit about the history and stories of the buildings and places I sketch. I find that incredibly fulfilling as well as educational. Architecture can give insight into cultures and people.

What are the moments you feel most grateful for what you do?

Arriving in a new place for the first time and noticing all the small details that I want to draw. That’s a moment that I’m always incredibly grateful for, and thankfully, I find I’m able to re-live that moment again when I look back on the sketches I’ve created from a trip.

What's the most surprising way your work has changed you?

My mindset towards travelling has shifted as a result of my work. I probably don’t switch off as much as I used to, and if anything, I find myself busier than usual as I’m energised with inspiration and ideas.

How do you balance presence and productivity in your life?

Drawing is an invitation to slow down and focus on one subject, so the process allows for presence and productivity. I find inspiration comes from being present as well. So a walk, a coffee or just taking in surroundings is very important to me and ultimately, my work.

When do you feel most vulnerable?

When pushing beyond my comfort zone in terms of creative and technical ability, however that’s also the best area for seeing progress.

What role does Agora play in your creative journey?

The Agora is a perfect example of the type of subjects I’m interested; a building with a rich backstory which has been updated and shaped by the creative personalities who have given it this new life. It’s also a space which encourages collaboration and being present – two factors I feel to be really central to any creative journey!

If you had to describe yourself beyond your work, what would that sound like?

Beyond my work, I feel I’m someone who is just interested in stories and adventure. I think those are the main passions which make up who I am.
